How to Set Up a New Router
New router out of the box? It looks intimidating but the setup is a 20-minute job. The modern way is almost always through a phone app. Here's the full walkthrough.
Quick path
Plug router power in. Plug ethernet from your modem into the router's WAN/Internet port. Download the router's app from the App Store or Google Play. Open it, follow setup. Done.
Before you start
- New router (with power adapter and ethernet cable)
- Your existing modem (or combo gateway from your ISP)
- Your phone
- 20 minutes
Step 1: Find a good spot for the router
Wi-Fi degrades through walls, water (fish tanks!), and metal. Best placement:
- Central location in your home, not in a corner
- Elevated (not on the floor)
- Out in the open, not in a cabinet
- Away from microwaves and baby monitors
Step 2: Connect to the modem
- Unplug your modem from power. Wait 30 seconds.
- Plug one end of the ethernet cable into your modem's LAN/Ethernet port
- Plug the other end into your router's WAN or Internet port (often colored differently)
- Plug modem back into power. Wait 2 minutes for lights to stabilize.
- Plug router into power. Wait 2 minutes.
Step 3: Download the router app
Modern setup uses the app. Look for the brand on the box:
- TP-Link: TP-Link Tether app
- Netgear Nighthawk: Nighthawk app
- Asus: ASUS Router app
- Eero: eero app
- Google Wifi / Nest Wifi: Google Home app
- Linksys: Linksys app
Step 4: Follow the app's setup
The app walks you through:
- Create a router admin account (this is for managing the router, not the Wi-Fi password)
- Connect your phone to the router's default Wi-Fi (printed on the router sticker)
- The app finds the router automatically
- Test the internet connection
- Name your Wi-Fi (the SSID)
- Set a Wi-Fi password (14+ characters)
- Wait 1-2 minutes while it applies and restarts
Step 5: Reconnect your devices
Every device will need the new Wi-Fi name and password. Start with your phone (already done), then laptops, smart TVs, speakers, doorbells, etc.
Step 6: Security settings
In the app, go to settings and make sure:
- WPA2 or WPA3 security is enabled (WPA3 is newer, slightly better)
- WPS is disabled (older, less secure)
- Auto-firmware updates are on (keeps the router patched)
- The router admin password is strong (not "admin")
Step 7: Set up a guest network
Most apps let you create a guest network. Separate Wi-Fi for visitors that doesn't expose your main network. Great for sharing without giving out your real password.
What if it won't connect to the internet
- Check the ethernet cable is in the WAN port, not a LAN port
- Power-cycle the modem and router (unplug, wait, plug back in)
- Check if your modem needs a coax cable plugged in (cable internet)
- Call your ISP. They may need to re-register the new router's MAC address
