Forgot Your Wi-Fi Password? Here's How to Find It
You need to share your Wi-Fi with a friend or set up a new device, but you don't remember the password. Don't worry. If any device in your house is already connected, the password is recoverable.
Easiest method
Check the sticker on your router. Most routers have the default Wi-Fi name and password printed on the back or bottom. If you never changed it, that's still your password.
On iPhone (iOS 16 and later)
- Open Settings > Wi-Fi
- Tap the (i) next to your connected network
- Tap Password
- Authenticate with Face ID or passcode
- Password reveals. Tap to copy.
On Mac
- System Settings > Wi-Fi
- Click Details next to your connected network
- The password field shows dots. Hover over it and click Show (or just click)
- Authenticate with your Mac password
Alternative on older macOS: open Keychain Access, search your Wi-Fi network name, double-click, check Show Password.
On Windows 10/11
- Open Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center
- Click your Wi-Fi connection name
- Click Wireless Properties > Security tab
- Check Show characters
On Android
Methods vary by version:
- Android 10+: Settings > Connections (or Network & Internet) > Wi-Fi > tap the gear next to network > QR code icon. Shows the password under the QR code on some phones.
- Samsung: Settings > Connections > Wi-Fi > gear icon > QR code
- Pixel: Settings > Network & Internet > Internet > gear > Share > password may show below QR code
From your router itself
If you can't get the password from any device:
- Look at the sticker on the router (default password)
- Log in to the router's settings at
192.168.1.1or192.168.0.1in a browser (need a connected device or ethernet cable) - Or factory reset the router (hold Reset button for 10 seconds). This wipes all settings and restores the default password from the sticker.
Share via QR code (the modern way)
Once you have the password, the easiest way to share it with someone:
- On iPhone: nearby iPhones get a "Share Wi-Fi" prompt automatically when they try to join your network
- On Android: settings > Wi-Fi > gear > QR code. Other person scans it.
