How to Change Your Wi-Fi Password

By Isaac Farris·Updated May 23, 2026·5 minute read

Whether you're locking out an ex-roommate or just doing a long-overdue security update, here's the universal process. Most routers work the same way.

Quick path

Connect to your Wi-Fi. Open a browser. Go to 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1. Log in with the admin password from the router sticker. Find Wireless or Wi-Fi settings. Change the password. Save.

Before you start: make a list

Every device on your Wi-Fi will lose connection. Write down what you'll need to reconnect:

Step 1: Connect to your Wi-Fi

You must be on the Wi-Fi (or plugged in by ethernet) to access the router. Use any device.

Step 2: Open the router login page

Open a browser. In the address bar, type one of these:

Step 3: Sign in

The admin username and password are usually printed on a sticker on the router. Often "admin" / "admin" or "admin" / "password". This is different from your Wi-Fi password.

If you've changed it before and forgot, you'll need to factory reset the router (hold the Reset button for 10 seconds) and start over.

Step 4: Find Wi-Fi settings

The menu name depends on brand:

Step 5: Change the password

Look for a field called Password, Passphrase, or Network Key. Type your new password.

Pick something strong: 12+ characters, mix of letters, numbers, and a couple symbols. Avoid common words. Something like BlueCoffee99!Mug is great.

Step 6: Save and apply

Click Save or Apply. The router restarts. You'll lose Wi-Fi for 30-60 seconds, including the device you're using to change the setting.

Step 7: Reconnect every device

Go through your list. Each device will say "incorrect password" since the old one is dead. Forget the network on each device (or select "Forget this network") and reconnect with the new password.

Pro tip: change both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz

Many routers have two networks (2.4 GHz for range, 5 GHz for speed). Change the password on both, or older devices that only support 2.4 GHz won't be able to reconnect.
