Microsoft Word Won't Open?

By Isaac Farris·Updated May 23, 2026·5 minute read

Word stuck on splash screen? Crashes on launch? Just bounces in the dock? Here's the fix order.

Quick fix to try first

Open Word in Safe Mode: hold Ctrl while opening on Windows (Cmd+Option+Shift on Mac). If it opens in Safe Mode, an add-in is the problem.

1. Restart your computer

If you haven't restarted in a few days, do it. Background Office processes can get stuck. A restart clears them.

2. Open Word in Safe Mode

Safe Mode bypasses add-ins and templates.

Windows

  1. Hold Ctrl while double-clicking the Word icon
  2. Dialog asks if you want Safe Mode. Click Yes

Mac

  1. Hold Cmd + Option + Shift while clicking the Word icon
  2. Or open Terminal and run: open /Applications/Microsoft\ Word.app --args -safe

If Word opens in Safe Mode, the problem is an add-in. Disable them:

  1. In Safe Mode: File > Options > Add-ins
  2. At the bottom: Manage dropdown > pick COM Add-ins > Go
  3. Uncheck all add-ins
  4. Click OK
  5. Close Word, reopen normally

3. Delete the Normal.dotm template

Normal.dotm is Word's default template. If corrupted, Word can't open. Deleting it makes Word create a fresh one.

Windows

  1. Close Word completely
  2. Press Windows + R
  3. Type: %appdata%\Microsoft\Templates and Enter
  4. Find Normal.dotm
  5. Rename it to Normal.old (don't delete; you can restore later)
  6. Open Word. New Normal.dotm is created automatically

Mac

  1. Close Word
  2. In Finder, hold Option, click Go > Library
  3. Navigate to Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.Office/User Content.localized/Templates.localized
  4. Rename Normal.dotm to Normal.old
  5. Reopen Word

4. Update Office

Outdated Office can have bugs that block startup.

Windows

  1. Open any Office app (try Outlook or Excel if Word won't open)
  2. File > Account > Update Options > Update Now

Mac

  1. Open Microsoft AutoUpdate app (in Applications/Microsoft AutoUpdate or via the Help menu of any Office app)
  2. Check for Updates > install

5. Repair Office (Windows)

  1. Settings > Apps > Installed apps
  2. Find Microsoft 365 (or Microsoft Office)
  3. Click three dots > Modify
  4. Choose Quick Repair first (fast, doesn't need internet)
  5. If that doesn't help, run Online Repair (slower, more thorough)
  6. Restart computer

6. Reinstall Office

Last resort but often the cleanest fix.

Windows

  1. Settings > Apps > Microsoft 365 > Uninstall
  2. Restart
  3. Go to office.com, sign in, download and reinstall

Mac

  1. Drag Microsoft Word from Applications to Trash (or all of Office)
  2. Empty trash
  3. Sign in at office.com, download and reinstall

7. Check for conflicting software

Open a specific document, not Word itself

If you can't open Word but need to recover a document:

Word for Mac specifically

If Word crashes on Mac on launch:

  1. Open Activity Monitor
  2. Search "Word" or "Microsoft"
  3. Force quit anything related
  4. Then reopen Word

Word Online as a backup

If desktop Word is broken, you can edit documents at office.com using Word for the web. Free with any Microsoft account, limited features but enough for editing existing docs.
