Fire TV Stick Won't Connect to Wi-Fi?
Stuck on the connection screen? Endless loading? Wi-Fi list empty? Here's the fix order.
Quick fix to try first
Unplug Fire Stick for 60 seconds. Plug back in. Re-enter Wi-Fi password very carefully (case-sensitive). If it still fails, try the wall adapter instead of plugging into the TV's USB port.
1. Restart Fire Stick and router
- Unplug Fire Stick from power for 60 seconds
- While waiting, unplug your router for 30 seconds, plug back in
- Wait for router to fully boot (lights stop blinking)
- Plug Fire Stick back in
- Try connecting
2. Use the wall adapter (not TV USB)
Many TVs don't provide enough power through their USB port. The Fire Stick will appear to work but drop Wi-Fi randomly. Always use the included USB wall adapter and HDMI extender if signal seems weak.
3. Check Wi-Fi password
Wi-Fi passwords are case-sensitive. Common mistakes:
- Lowercase l vs uppercase I vs number 1
- O vs 0
- S vs 5
- Extra space at end of password
Try connecting another device (phone) to confirm the password works.
4. Get closer to router
Fire Sticks have weak antennas. If the TV is far from router or behind walls, signal can be too weak.
Test: temporarily move the Fire Stick (and TV) to the same room as your router. If it connects there, distance is the problem.
Solutions: move router closer, add a mesh node, or use a Wi-Fi extender.
5. Force a hard reset on Fire Stick
If it's stuck on the loading screen and you can't get to settings:
- While Fire Stick is on, hold the Back button + Right button (direction)
- Hold for 10 seconds
- Fire Stick factory resets
- Set it up again from scratch
6. Forget Wi-Fi and reconnect (if you can reach settings)
- Settings > Network
- Select your Wi-Fi network
- Press Menu button on remote
- Choose Forget Network
- Scan again, choose your Wi-Fi, enter password
7. Check router's Wi-Fi band
Most Fire Sticks support both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. But:
- If your network is named differently for each band ("MyWiFi" and "MyWiFi-5G"), try connecting to 5 GHz for better speed (closer to router) or 2.4 GHz (farther)
- If both bands have the same name, you have band steering. Some Fire Sticks struggle with this. Temporarily separating them can help
8. Disable VPN or DNS settings on router
If you set up custom DNS (Pi-hole, AdGuard, NextDNS) and certain settings, Fire Stick can refuse to connect or activate. Try temporarily disabling and re-test.
9. Check router for MAC filtering
If you have MAC address filtering on your router, you'll need to add the Fire Stick's MAC address to the allow list.
If Fire Stick connects but won't activate
You can reach Wi-Fi but the Amazon login fails:
- Network is up but blocked. Check parental controls or guest network restrictions
- Amazon account locked. Sign into amazon.com to check
- Type Amazon password very carefully, no extra spaces
- If 2-step verification is on, use the code from your text/authenticator
Buy a newer Fire Stick?
If yours is more than 5 years old, Amazon may stop supporting it. The Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2023+) is a notable upgrade with Wi-Fi 6.
