Roku Remote Not Working?
Roku remotes are great until they're not. Here's how to get yours working again.
Quick fix to try first
Replace the batteries. Even if you think they're fine, even if they're new, try a fresh set. Old batteries are the cause about half the time, and even sealed new batteries can be duds. Also: install the Roku app on your phone right now as a backup remote.
1. Replace batteries
Most Roku remotes use 2 AA or AAA batteries. Voice Remote Pro is rechargeable via USB-C; plug it in for an hour.
Use fresh alkaline batteries (don't use old ones from another remote, even if they "still work"). Test with the new batteries.
2. Restart the Roku device
Unplug your Roku device (Stick, Streaming Stick, Ultra, Express) from power for 30 seconds. Plug back in. Wait for it to fully boot.
If you have a Roku TV, unplug the TV itself.
3. Re-pair an Enhanced remote
If you have an Enhanced Roku remote (the kind that works without pointing. Newer remotes), it needs to be paired to your specific Roku.
- Make sure batteries are fresh
- Open the battery compartment
- Find the small Pairing button
- Press and hold it for 5 seconds
- The light on the remote will flash
- Wait 30 seconds. The TV should show "Remote found" or similar.
4. Use your phone as a remote
While troubleshooting, install the official Roku app on your phone (App Store or Play Store). It works as a complete remote replacement.
Make sure your phone is on the same Wi-Fi network as the Roku. Open the app, tap your Roku, tap the Remote tab. Voice search, keyboard, full remote functions.
Even after you fix your physical remote, keep the app installed. Faster than typing on a TV remote for searches.
5. If only the volume buttons don't work
Some Roku remotes have volume buttons that control the TV separately (via IR or HDMI-CEC). If volume isn't working but the rest of the remote is:
- Go to Settings > Remotes & Devices > TV control > Set up TV control
- Or use the Remote app on your phone to navigate, then test volume from there
6. If the remote is unresponsive entirely
And you've tried fresh batteries and re-pairing:
- For Enhanced remotes (with pairing button): the remote may be permanently broken. Replacement remotes are $15-30 on Amazon. Get a Roku-brand replacement, not a generic one.
- For old IR remotes: aim directly at the front of the Roku device. Make sure nothing is blocking the line of sight.
7. Reset network if the remote app can't connect
If your physical remote works but the phone app can't find your Roku:
- Make sure phone and Roku are on the same Wi-Fi (especially the same network band. 2.4 vs 5 GHz)
- On the Roku: Settings > System > Advanced system settings > Network connection reset
