How to Set Up a Smart Plug
Smart plugs are the easiest way to make a regular device "smart." Plug a lamp into one, then control the lamp from your phone or with your voice. Setup takes 5 minutes.
Quick steps
1. Plug in. 2. Install brand's app. 3. Phone on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. 4. Open app, add device, follow prompts.
Universal smart plug setup
- Plug it into a wall outlet (not a power strip for initial setup)
- The plug's light should blink, meaning pairing mode
- If not, hold the button on the plug for 5-10 seconds until light flashes
- Install the brand's app from App Store or Play Store
- Create an account or sign in
- Tap + or "Add Device"
- Choose your plug model from the list
- Enter your Wi-Fi name and password (use 2.4 GHz network)
- Wait while it pairs
- Name it (Coffee Maker, Bedroom Lamp, etc.)

What you can do with smart plugs
- Turn devices on/off from anywhere
- Set schedules: lamp turns on at sunset
- Voice control via Alexa, Google, Siri
- "Vacation mode": randomize light timing while away
- Power tracking (some models show how much energy a device uses)
- Routines: "Goodnight" turns off all lamps
What NOT to plug into a smart plug
- Space heaters (high wattage)
- Hair dryers (briefly high wattage)
- Microwaves
- Window AC units (depends on size; check plug specs)
- Anything above the plug's wattage rating (usually 1500W or 1800W)
Won't connect?
- Phone must be on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Most plugs don't support 5 GHz
- Reset the plug: hold button 10+ seconds
- Plug it closer to router during setup
- Turn off VPN on phone
- Try the setup in a different room if Wi-Fi is weak where you started
Smart plug vs smart bulb
Smart plugs are simpler and cheaper but only turn things fully on or off. Smart bulbs let you dim and change colors. For a lamp, a smart bulb is usually better. For a coffee maker, fan, or Christmas lights, smart plug.
