How to Set Up a Smart Plug

By Isaac Farris·Updated May 23, 2026·4 minute read

Smart plugs are the easiest way to make a regular device "smart." Plug a lamp into one, then control the lamp from your phone or with your voice. Setup takes 5 minutes.

Quick steps

1. Plug in. 2. Install brand's app. 3. Phone on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. 4. Open app, add device, follow prompts.

Universal smart plug setup

  1. Plug it into a wall outlet (not a power strip for initial setup)
  2. The plug's light should blink, meaning pairing mode
  3. If not, hold the button on the plug for 5-10 seconds until light flashes
  4. Install the brand's app from App Store or Play Store
  5. Create an account or sign in
  6. Tap + or "Add Device"
  7. Choose your plug model from the list
  8. Enter your Wi-Fi name and password (use 2.4 GHz network)
  9. Wait while it pairs
  10. Name it (Coffee Maker, Bedroom Lamp, etc.)

  1. Plug in
  2. Open Apple Home (or your preferred app)
  3. Tap +, scan the Matter QR code on the plug or box
  4. Choose room

Connect to Alexa

  1. Alexa app > Devices > + > Add Device
  2. Choose "Plug," then your brand
  3. Enable the skill, sign in with the plug app's account
  4. Discover devices
  5. Now you can say "Alexa, turn on coffee maker"

Connect to Google Home

  1. Google Home app > + > Set up device > Works with Google
  2. Find your brand, sign in

Smart plug vs smart bulb

Smart plugs are simpler and cheaper but only turn things fully on or off. Smart bulbs let you dim and change colors. For a lamp, a smart bulb is usually better. For a coffee maker, fan, or Christmas lights, smart plug.
