Alexa Not Responding? 7 Fixes
"Alexa." Silence. "ALEXA!" Still nothing. Or worse, "I'm having trouble understanding right now." Welcome to the most common Echo problem. Here's how to fix it.
Quick fix to try first
Unplug Alexa from the wall for 30 seconds, then plug back in. Wait for the orange ring to fade. Try again. Fixes about half of "Alexa not responding" cases.
1. Check the LED ring color
The light ring tells you what's wrong:
- Blue: normal, listening or thinking
- Red: microphone is muted, or no internet
- Orange: setting up or no Wi-Fi connection
- Purple flash: Do Not Disturb is on
- Yellow: you have a message waiting (not an error)
- Green spinning: incoming call
- White: volume changed
2. Make sure the mic isn't muted
Look on top of the Echo for the microphone button (crossed-out mic icon). If the LED ring is red, the mic is muted. Press the button to unmute. This catches more people than you'd think.
3. Check Wi-Fi
If the ring is orange, Alexa lost Wi-Fi. To check or fix:
- Open the Alexa app on your phone
- Tap Devices
- Tap your Echo
- Check the status. If offline, tap Wi-Fi network > Change > reconnect
If multiple smart home devices are offline, restart your Wi-Fi router (unplug 60 seconds, replug).
4. Restart the Echo
Unplug from the wall, wait 30 seconds, plug back in. Wait 1-2 minutes for the boot sequence.
5. Restart the Alexa app on your phone
Sometimes the app gets stuck. Force-close it and reopen. iOS: swipe up to app switcher, swipe Alexa away. Android: similar.
6. Check Amazon's server status
If your Alexa devices are all suddenly unresponsive, Amazon might be having an outage. Search "is Alexa down" or check downdetector.com/status/amazon-alexa. If others are reporting the same, wait it out.
7. Factory reset (if nothing else works)
Different methods depending on model:
- Echo Dot (3rd-5th gen): hold the Action button (single dot) for 25 seconds. LED turns orange then blue.
- Echo (4th gen): hold the Action button for 25 seconds
- Echo Show: swipe down from top > Settings > Device Options > Reset to Factory Defaults
After reset, you'll set the Echo up again via the Alexa app.
If Alexa keeps misunderstanding you
Sometimes Alexa hears you fine but understands wrong. Things to try:
- Train your voice: Alexa app > More > Settings > Your Profile & Family > tap your name > Voice ID > Set Up
- Move the Echo away from other speakers, TVs, or noisy appliances
- Speak slightly slower than normal
- Check that the wake word is set to what you're saying (Alexa, Echo, Amazon, Computer, or Ziggy)
