iPhone Speaker Not Working? 7 Fixes That Help
No sound at all, crackling, or just way too quiet? Before you assume the speaker is broken, run through these checks. Nine times out of ten the fix is something simple.
Quick fix to try first
Check the silent switch on the left side of your iPhone. If you see an orange line, silent mode is on. Flip it the other way. Then press volume up several times to make sure you're not on zero.
1. Check silent mode and volume
The silent switch on the side is the #1 cause. Orange showing means silent. Flip it. Then press the volume up button while NOT in any app to set the ringer volume.
2. Disconnect Bluetooth
If your iPhone is connected to AirPods, headphones, or a car system, sound is going there instead. Open Control Center, long-press the audio card, and check what's connected. Tap your iPhone speaker to switch.
3. Clean the speaker grille
Dust, lint, and pocket fuzz pack into the bottom speaker over time. Use a soft toothbrush to gently brush the grille. Do not poke with anything sharp. A small piece of painter's tape can pull lint out cleanly.
4. Restart your iPhone
A simple restart clears audio routing glitches. Hold the Side button + Volume Up until the slider appears. Slide to power off. Wait 30 seconds. Power back on.
5. Check Do Not Disturb and Focus modes
Some Focus modes silence notifications but you'd still hear music. Check Settings > Focus and turn off any active mode. Look for the moon icon in Control Center.
6. Test with a ringtone
Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone. Tap any ringtone. If you hear it, the speaker works and the issue was something else (Bluetooth, app-specific volume, silent mode).
7. Water damage check
If you recently got the iPhone wet, water in the speaker chamber muffles sound. Don't use a hair dryer or put it in rice. Just let it air-dry speaker-side down for 24-48 hours. Newer iPhones have a "water in speaker" alert that uses sound to push water out.
When to repair
If none of these work and the ringtone test fails at full volume, the speaker is likely damaged. Apple repair is $80-150 for most models. Third-party repair runs $50-100 and is usually fine for older iPhones.
