iPhone Camera Black or Won't Open?
You open the Camera app and just get a black screen. Or the app opens but freezes. Or the shutter button does nothing. Here's what actually fixes it.
Quick fix to try first
Force close the Camera app: swipe up from the bottom (or double-press Home), then flick the Camera card up. Reopen. If still black, restart the iPhone (hold side button and either volume button, slide to power off).
1. Force close the Camera app
The Camera app sometimes gets stuck. Force closing fixes it almost every time.
- Swipe up from the bottom and pause (or double-press Home on older iPhones)
- Find the Camera card
- Flick it upward to close
- Tap Camera icon again
2. Restart your iPhone
If force closing didn't fix it, a restart almost always will.
Press and hold the side button and either volume button until you see "slide to power off." Slide. Wait 30 seconds. Press the side button to turn back on.
3. Check the case and lens
Sounds silly but it happens often: some cases or magnetic mounts cover the lens or have a built-in cover. Also, fingerprints or smudges can make the camera look "off." Wipe the lens with a clean microfiber cloth.
4. Switch between front and rear cameras
Open Camera, tap the rotate button. Switch back and forth a few times. This sometimes "wakes up" a stuck camera.
5. Test in another app
Open Instagram, Snapchat, or FaceTime. Try the camera there. If it works in those apps, the Camera app itself is the problem. Try deleting and reinstalling it (it'll come back from the App Store).
6. Update iOS
Go to Settings > General > Software Update. Install any pending updates. Camera bugs are usually fixed within an iOS update or two.
7. Reset all settings
This won't erase photos, contacts, or apps. It will reset Wi-Fi passwords, wallpaper, and a few system settings.
Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings.
Still black? It's likely hardware
If the camera is black in every app on both front and rear, even after restarting and resetting settings, the camera module is probably bad. On iPhone 12 and newer, this often shows up after a drop. Apple Store or a reputable repair shop is the next step.
One last test: open the Magnifier app (built into iOS). If even the Magnifier shows black, you've confirmed hardware.
