Android Storage Full? How to Free Space
Storage full warning, can't update apps, can't take new photos. The Android storage full message is annoying but fixable in about 15 minutes for most people.
Quick fix to try first
Open Files (Samsung Files or Google Files), tap the Clean tab. It finds junk files, downloaded files you don't need, and large media. One tap often frees several gigabytes.
1. See what's actually using your storage
Samsung: Settings > Battery and device care > Storage
Pixel: Settings > Storage
You'll see categories: Apps, Images, Videos, Audio, Documents. Tap each to see details.
2. Move photos to Google Photos (the big win)
- Install Google Photos from the Play Store
- Open it and enable backup (free 15 GB)
- Wait for backup to finish (can take hours over Wi-Fi)
- In Google Photos: menu > Photos settings > Backup > Free up space
Photos stay in the cloud, available on any device. Local copies removed. Often frees 5-20 GB.
3. Empty Downloads folder
Open the Files app, go to Downloads. Most of what's in there is junk you don't need anymore. PDF attachments, old screenshots, files from years ago.
4. Clear app caches
Apps like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and Chrome can use multiple gigabytes of cache.
Samsung: Settings > Apps > pick app > Storage > Clear cache
Pixel: Settings > Apps > pick app > Storage & cache > Clear cache
This won't log you out or delete data. Just deletes temp files.
5. Uninstall apps you don't use
Long-press any app icon, tap Uninstall. Be ruthless. You can always reinstall later.
Easy targets: games you finished, apps from one-time vacations, apps you forgot you had, manufacturer bloatware you can actually uninstall.
6. Move media to an SD card (if you have one)
Most Samsung phones still support microSD cards. A 256 GB card is $20-30 and gives you tons of extra space.
After inserting, go to Settings > Battery and device care > Storage > tap SD Card > you can format and then move photos, videos, and downloads to it.
7. Clear messages (especially Samsung Messages or WhatsApp)
WhatsApp and similar apps store every photo and video anyone has ever sent you. Years of group chats with cousins sharing memes can be 10+ GB.
In WhatsApp: Settings > Storage and Data > Manage Storage > review large files.
8. Use Samsung Smart Switch or factory reset as last resort
If you've cleaned up everything and you're still cramped, your phone simply has too little storage for how you use it. Consider:
- Adding cloud storage (Google One: 100 GB for $1.99/month)
- Upgrading to a phone with more storage next time
- Factory reset and start clean (back up first)
