Disable Startup Programs on Windows

By Isaac Farris·Updated May 23, 2026·6 minute read

Every program that launches at startup makes your PC boot slower and uses RAM in the background. Most can be disabled safely. Here's how to clean up your startup list without breaking anything.

Quick steps

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc. Click Startup apps tab. Right click the programs you don't need at startup > Disable.

Method 1: Task Manager (recommended)

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager
  2. Click Startup apps in the left sidebar (Windows 11) or Startup tab (Windows 10)
  3. Look at the Status and Startup impact columns
  4. Right click any high-impact program you don't need and choose Disable

Method 2: Settings app

  1. Settings > Apps > Startup
  2. Toggle off anything you don't need at startup

What's safe to disable

These usually launch programs you don't need until you actually open them:

What NOT to disable

These are part of how Windows works. Disabling them can break audio, networking, or security.

Method 3: Deeper cleanup with MSConfig (advanced)

  1. Press Windows + R
  2. Type msconfig and press Enter
  3. Go to the Services tab
  4. Tick "Hide all Microsoft services" at the bottom (important, prevents disabling system services)
  5. Review the remaining services. Untick any you don't need (third-party updaters, etc.)
  6. Click Apply, OK, restart

Method 4: Startup folder

Some programs add themselves here instead of through Task Manager.

  1. Press Windows + R
  2. Type shell:startup and press Enter
  3. You'll see a folder. Delete shortcuts to programs you don't want at startup

Also check shell:common startup for system-wide entries.

How to measure the impact

Open Task Manager > Startup apps. Look at Last BIOS time at the top right (your boot baseline). Disable a few programs, restart, check the number again. Compare.

Also check the Startup impact column: High, Medium, Low. Focus on Highs first.

If you regret a change

Just go back to Task Manager > Startup apps and right click > Enable. Easy undo.
