Disable Startup Programs on Windows
Every program that launches at startup makes your PC boot slower and uses RAM in the background. Most can be disabled safely. Here's how to clean up your startup list without breaking anything.
Quick steps
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc. Click Startup apps tab. Right click the programs you don't need at startup > Disable.
Method 1: Task Manager (recommended)
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager
- Click Startup apps in the left sidebar (Windows 11) or Startup tab (Windows 10)
- Look at the Status and Startup impact columns
- Right click any high-impact program you don't need and choose Disable
Method 2: Settings app
- Settings > Apps > Startup
- Toggle off anything you don't need at startup
What's safe to disable
These usually launch programs you don't need until you actually open them:
- Spotify, Discord, Steam, Epic Games: launch them when you want to use them
- Microsoft Edge / Edge Update: Edge opens fast anyway
- Adobe Updater, Acrobat Update Service: updates can wait
- Google Drive, OneDrive: only if you don't actively sync (they'll still sync when you open them)
- Skype, Teams (personal): launch when needed
- Manufacturer bloatware: HP Support Assistant, Dell SupportAssist, Lenovo Vantage. Don't disable updaters for drivers, though
- iTunes Helper, Apple Push: only need them when iPhone is connected
- Cortana: if you don't use it
- Cloud storage apps you don't use: Dropbox, Box
What NOT to disable
These are part of how Windows works. Disabling them can break audio, networking, or security.
- Microsoft Defender / Windows Security: your antivirus
- Realtek HD Audio: for sound
- Intel / NVIDIA / AMD graphics: for display
- Your antivirus: Norton, McAfee, Avast, etc.
- Your VPN: if you use one regularly
- Synaptics or other trackpad drivers on laptops
- Bluetooth services if you use Bluetooth devices
- Logitech / Razer / Corsair if you use their mice/keyboards with custom buttons
Method 3: Deeper cleanup with MSConfig (advanced)
- Press Windows + R
- Type
msconfigand press Enter - Go to the Services tab
- Tick "Hide all Microsoft services" at the bottom (important, prevents disabling system services)
- Review the remaining services. Untick any you don't need (third-party updaters, etc.)
- Click Apply, OK, restart
Method 4: Startup folder
Some programs add themselves here instead of through Task Manager.
- Press Windows + R
- Type
shell:startupand press Enter - You'll see a folder. Delete shortcuts to programs you don't want at startup
Also check shell:common startup for system-wide entries.
How to measure the impact
Open Task Manager > Startup apps. Look at Last BIOS time at the top right (your boot baseline). Disable a few programs, restart, check the number again. Compare.
Also check the Startup impact column: High, Medium, Low. Focus on Highs first.
If you regret a change
Just go back to Task Manager > Startup apps and right click > Enable. Easy undo.
