AI translation tools: best free and paid options

AI translation has gone from "good enough to get the gist" to "good enough for most actual use" in the last few years. Whether you're emailing a foreign supplier, reading a document, or having a conversation with someone in another language, the right tool gets you 95% of the way there free.

Quick picks

  • Fastest free translation: Google Translate
  • Highest quality writing: DeepL
  • Best with context: ChatGPT or Claude
  • Real-time conversation: Google Translate Conversation Mode or Apple Translate
  • Camera/sign translation: Google Translate camera mode

The main tools

Google Translate

The default. translate.google.com. Free apps for iPhone and Android.

Quality varies by language. Excellent for Spanish, French, German, Japanese. Weaker for languages with less training data.

DeepL

Many people's favorite for written translation. deepl.com.

ChatGPT / Claude

Best when you need context, cultural nuance, or to translate AND explain.

"Translate this Italian email to English. Then explain the tone and what kind of relationship the sender expects."

Or:

"Translate this English contract to Spanish. Keep the legal terminology accurate. Highlight anything where Spanish and English legal concepts don't map cleanly."

Apple Translate

Built into iOS and Mac. Free. Conversation mode is excellent.

Privacy advantage: Apple Translate processes on-device when possible, less sent to servers.

Microsoft Translator

Free. Good for business documents, built into Microsoft 365. Translator app on iPhone and Android.

Pixel Interpreter Mode

If you have a Google Pixel phone: "Hey Google, be my Japanese interpreter." Real-time conversation translation. Excellent.
